Virginia Gov. Youngkin Vetoes 159 Democrat Bills in a Single Day, Approaches 400 Total Vetoes

Virginia has become the battleground for a fierce political showdown. The state’s Democrat-controlled legislature pushed an aggressive agenda this session. Bills flooded the governor’s desk. The General Assembly passed nearly a thousand pieces of legislation.

Democrats celebrated their legislative victories. They anticipated implementing their progressive vision for the Old Dominion. But they failed to account for one critical factor.

You could call him “Veto Corleone.” That’s what one Republican strategist dubbed Governor Glenn Youngkin after he vetoed a staggering 159 Democrat-backed bills on Wednesday alone. With a firm hand reminiscent of the famous Godfather character, Youngkin has made it clear who’s really in charge. And I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a conservative leader with this kind of backbone!

Youngkin Approaches 400 Total Vetoes

The governor is approaching 400 total vetoes during his term – a number that dwarfs his predecessors. By comparison, former Democratic Governor Mark Warner vetoed just 18 bills during his entire four-year term. Even former Republican Governor Bob McDonnell’s veto count was similarly modest.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe, with over 110 vetoes during his term, comes closest to Youngkin’s record-setting pace. But even McAuliffe’s numbers pale in comparison to Youngkin’s veto prowess. Isn’t it interesting how the media rarely celebrates this kind of conservative resistance?

“I have returned many bills with recommended amendments, hoping that we can come together next week with a common purpose to advance these bills,” Youngkin said. He added that his vetoed bills collectively would “take the commonwealth backward by raising the cost of living, hurting our strong job growth, stifling innovation, undermining our All-American All-of-the-Above Power and Energy Plan or making our communities less safe.”

The Democrats’ two-seat majority in each chamber falls far short of the numbers needed to override these vetoes, leaving their legislative agenda effectively dead in the water. And thank goodness for that!

Blocking the Progressive Agenda

Youngkin’s vetoes targeted a wide range of progressive priorities. Several bills would have restricted Virginians’ constitutional rights and undermined traditional values.

Prayer would have been banned near abortion clinics under one vetoed bill. Such a measure would have severely limited religious expression and free speech. Youngkin refused to allow this attack on First Amendment rights. Can you imagine a more direct assault on religious liberty?

Gun control measures also fell to Youngkin’s veto pen. Two bills that would have restricted the purchase or transfer of firearms – clear violations of Second Amendment protections – were swiftly rejected. The left never stops trying to chip away at our constitutional rights, do they?

On the economic front, Youngkin protected Virginia businesses and workers from harmful progressive policies. He nixed legislation that would have raised the minimum wage to $13.50 per hour, and eventually to $15. These increases would have burdened small businesses and potentially eliminated jobs for entry-level workers.

About a dozen bills that critics say would have raised costs on Virginia families also met their demise. In an era of inflation and economic uncertainty, Youngkin’s commitment to fiscal responsibility stands as a bulwark against progressive overreach. When will Democrats learn that you can’t tax and spend your way to prosperity?

Making History in Richmond

While flexing his veto muscle, Youngkin has shown he’s not opposed to all legislation. He highlighted his signing of a bill to keep school lunches free of artificial dyes. This is a measure that aligns with an initiative from President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

This selective approach demonstrates Youngkin’s commitment to principles over partisanship. When legislation serves the common good without undermining conservative values or imposing undue burdens, the governor has proven willing to give his approval.

However, when faced with bills that would undermine public safety, traditional values, or economic prosperity, Youngkin has shown unflinching resolve. Ten bills characterized as “soft on crime” legislation by critics met swift rejection, maintaining Virginia’s commitment to law and order.

The governor also vetoed a comprehensive “environmental justice” strategy that would have expanded bureaucracy and imposed new regulations on Virginia’s businesses and communities. I’ve seen these kinds of progressive policies before – they’re just excuses for more government control over our lives.

Governor Youngkin’s unprecedented use of veto power demonstrates how conservative executives can effectively counter progressive agendas even when facing opposition-controlled legislatures. The Virginia experience offers a powerful lesson in the importance of constitutional checks and balances.

By standing firm against legislation that would burden taxpayers, restrict constitutional rights, or undermine public safety, Youngkin has shown that one determined conservative leader can make a tremendous difference.

As America faces similar battles between progressive legislatures and conservative executives across the country, the “Veto Corleone” of Virginia has established a model of principled governance that prioritizes traditional values, economic opportunity, and the rule of law over the progressive agenda. Sometimes, the most powerful word in a governor’s vocabulary is simply “no.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Governor Youngkin demonstrated how conservative executives can effectively block progressive agendas even with opposition-controlled legislatures.
  • Constitutional checks and balances provide powerful tools when wielded by principled conservative leadership.
  • Standing firm against legislation that burdens taxpayers and restricts rights establishes a model for conservative governance nationwide.
  • Sometimes the most effective conservative strategy is simply saying “no” to progressive overreach.
