Texas AG Ken Paxton Moves to Block Austin’s Taxpayer-Funding for Out-of-State Abortions
Texas AG Ken Paxton Moves to Block Austin’s Taxpayer-Funding for Out-of-State Abortions

Heading into the presidential election, abortion has become one of America’s most polarizing issues. Democrats have continued to move the goalposts when it comes to abortion. Indeed, their stances on this issue are now more woke than ever before.

Thankfully, the great state of Texas has made a point of fighting back against this in a big way. In the Lone Star state, abortion is banned at any stage during pregnancy except if the mother has a life-threatening condition. An abortion can also only be performed in Texas if it’s proven that continuing the pregnancy would result in “substantial impairment of a major bodily function.”

This has, of course, enraged liberals everywhere, as the left is more pro-abortion than ever these days. That’s why the city of Austin, Texas, responded to this abortion ban by allocating hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to helping women travel out of state to get abortions.

Now, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is aiming to put a stop to this. He’s filed a lawsuit, the goal of which is to block Austin’s use of $400,000 in taxpayer funds to fund out-of-state abortion travel expenses.

From The Washington Examiner:
Austin implemented the “Reproductive Health Grant” as part of the city’s 2024-2025 budget, intending to support city residents in traveling for abortions.

“No city in Texas has the authority to spend taxpayer money in this manner. In this case, the City of Austin is illegally seeking to use public funding to support travel expenses for out-of-state abortions,” Paxton said in a press release on Friday. “The Texas Constitution prohibits governmental entities from doing so.”

Paxton argues that the grant violates the Texas Constitution’s gift clause, which prohibits “any county, city, town, or other political corporation or subdivision of the State to lend its credit or to grant public money or thing of value in aid of, or to any individual … whatsoever.”

Austin City Councilwoman and Chairwoman of the Public Health Committee Vanessa Fuentes fired back by whining that Paxton’s lawsuit is “disappointing but not surprising.

“Ken Paxton should focus on actually helping Texans instead of suppressing communities for promoting healthcare,” Fuentes said. “Reproductive care is essential healthcare, and these actions only further undermine local efforts to uphold bodily freedom.”

Paxton IS Helping Texans With This Lawsuit

In reality, Paxton IS helping Texans with this lawsuit. The people of Texas should not have their hard-earned tax dollars being used to pay for travel to undergo a procedure that is banned in their state. It’s as simple as that.

If liberals really have that big of a problem living someplace that bans abortion, they should leave Texas. After all, liberal meccas like California and New York would be all too happy to have them!

Of course, that would mean having to pay the steep taxes that come with living in a liberal-run state. Perhaps that’s why it’s not very appealing to them. That being said, these liberals shouldn’t get to enjoy all the benefits of living in a Republican-run state like Texas while then using Texan tax dollars to travel for a procedure that is illegal in the state.

If a Texas woman wants to get an abortion, she should figure out how to pay her travel expenses herself. Texan taxpayers should not be on the hook for funding anything that has to do with abortions. In the end, what Austin is doing here is an example of the left’s woke agenda going way too far. We applaud Paxton for pushing back against this, and we hope his lawsuit is a huge success!

Key Takeaways:

  • Abortion is banned in Texas except in very specific situations.
  • Austin allocated $400K in funding to pay travel expenses for women to get abortions outside the state.
  • AG Paxton has filed a lawsuit to stop this.
