What’s Happening:
This weekend, millions of Americans tuned into Superbowl LVII. Tens of thousands descended on Glendale, Arizona to watch the epic battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. But, before the kickoff, the nation stood to honor our nation and its flag.
Despite years of disrespect and controversy, the NFL proudly aired the National Anthem. The song was performed by singer and guitarist Chris Stapleton. To say the moment was powerful is an understatement.

Stapleton wowed with his simple yet moving performance. More than a few people were seen with tears in their eyes, including Eagles’ coach Nick Sirianni.

The NFL might have suggested Sirianni was simply crying over appearing at the Superbowl for the first time. But it seems much more likely that he was overcome with emotion as Stapleton sang our National Anthem.
The league has taken quite a bit of criticism in recent years for its refusal to respect our country. Athletes have been allowed to kneel during the anthem as a form of protest. Most fans have seen that as an insult to our country.
Some professional sports leagues have even considered axing the National Anthem altogether. Or not airing it during televised games. The NFL made the right choice to keep the anthem in the game and to air it before the game began.
Tens of thousands of Americans proudly stood for the anthem, including those playing on the field. Sirianni was not ashamed to let his tears drop during the song–something he shared with not a few others.
The powerful, yet simple moment is a reminder of who we are as a nation. Despite our differences and the forces that try to divide us, we all share the same liberties and values.
Key Takeaways:
- Chris Stapleton performed a rousing version of the National Anthem before Superbowl LVII.
- Eagles’ coach Nick Sirianni was seen crying during the performance.
- The NFL, among other leagues, has come under fire in recent years but aired the anthem.
