What’s Happening:
Hamas terrorists launched a surprise attack from Palestine against Israel over the weekend that killed unsuspecting civilians. The world was in shock and nation leaders across the globe denounced the violence.
U.S. political leaders across the aisle joined in declared the attack despicable and promised to support Israel in any way against the terrorists. That sentiment was not expressed by a few U.S. lawmakers who gave half-hearted denouncements of the violence or even openly displayed support for the country enabling Hamas.
Republicans are lashing out after a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives decide to fly the Palestinian flag on Capitol grounds in a show of support. One GOP lawmaker quickly put forth an amendment to keep taxpayers from paying for such a display.
Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) sponsored an appropriation amendment clarifying that funds may not be used on any foreign flags. His amendment push comes as Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) flies the Palestinian flag outside her office.
From the Washington Examiner:
“The halls of Congress belong to America,” Miller said. “They should be reserved for flags that embody our great nation. The Palestinian flag should not have a place here. That’s why I sponsored an appropriations amendment to end this silliness.”
The amendment clarified that flags of different U.S. states and possessions may be flown, as well as the prisoner of war remembrance flag.
The surprise invasion of Israel by Hamas over the weekend killed hundreds of Israeli civilians and news reports are starting to detail the atrocities committed by the terrorists. For years Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, has been critical of Israel and she has been accused of antisemitism.
Watered-down responses regarding the attack on Israel have come from Democrat Party leaders and the president, and controversial Democrat representatives – members of the “Squad” – have sympathized with and supported resistance efforts against Israel in the past.
Israel has been swift and harsh in its response to the attack, including cutting off supplies of food, water, and energy to Palestine. Tlaib made a statement that Israel’s past and current actions against violence are an “apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”
