Chuck Schumer Steps In The Way – Signals He Will Block GOP’s Justice Act For Police Reform

What’s Happening:

Given recent events, criminal justice reform has become a major issue.

On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are looking at various ways to change or even overhaul police and criminal justice systems.

For example, the GOP wants to pass legislation for police reform, and intend to hold the vote this week. But it doesn’t look like Democrats are on board…

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) made it clear that Democrats will likely move to block the bill.

The bill was put forth by Republican Senator Tim Scott (the only black GOP Senator). It needs 60 votes to pass.

However, based on what we’re hearing now, the bill may struggle mightily.

Said Schumer (via The Hill):

We Democrats are certain that the McConnell plan will not, indeed cannot, result in any legislation passing.

It’s clear that the Republican bill, as is, will not get 60 votes. There’s overwhelming opposition to the bill in our caucus.

He went on to call the bill a “ploy” by Sen. McConnell, and said the bill requires “large-scale and fundamental change.”

It’s already confirmed that several Democrats, including Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Cory Booker (N.J.), will vote against the bill proceeding.

Their problem is that the bill lacks “action.”

Said Booker:

The problem with the bill that Leader McConnell wants to put on the floor, it’s not bold. It’s not courageous.

What it does is it guarantees that the cycle of violence in our country, the cycle of the abuse of civil rights, the cycle of death that has so moved so many Americans will continue.

Despite this opposition, McConnell isn’t backing down.

He said the American people expect politicians to “do our jobs” and will push forward with the vote.

Furthermore, Sen. John Cornyn made it plain that they won’t negotiate with Democrats. In fact, he called them “hostage takers:”

Don’t they understand how the Senate operates?

I’m not really all that interested in negotiating with hostage takers. That’s what this is.

Key Takeaways:

  • Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, appear ready to block the GOP reform bill.
  • They claim the bill isn’t “courageous” enough and would require “large-scale” change.
  • McConnell and the GOP won’t back down, and will push forward with the legislation.
