Since 2020, the liberal media has been pushing the idea of “misinformation” and “disinformation.” Major outlets and online platforms have gone out of their way to silence or suppress numerous stories and posts—claiming they were crafted by Russia to manipulate Americans.

But many times, these posts were proven to not be “disinformation.” Instead, Americans began to question what these outlets were trying to do.

When you consider that Democrats in Congress frequently use these terms as well, Americans start to question what’s really going on in Washington. President Biden even tried to create a “Disinformation Board” that could decide what would be said online. Now, House Republicans are launching an investigation into a company that can determine whether a news organization is trustworthy or should be censored.

The House Oversight Committee announced this week that it has launched an investigation into a news-rating system that purportedly ranks which news outlets are trustworthy, with the focus of the probe surrounding whether the ratings group’s contracts with federal agencies have an influence on what news it attempts to suppress.

Oversight Chair James Comer, R-Ky., said Thursday his committee was investigating NewsGuard’s impact “on protected First Amendment speech and its potential to serve as a non-transparent agent of censorship campaigns.”

House Republicans are taking a look at Newsguard, an organization that can approve or cripple media outlets. Advertisers use Newsguard to decide if a news website is reliable or spreading “misinformation.” It should not come as a surprise that Newsguard almost always approves large, mainstream liberal outlets.

However, conservative-leaning websites are often branded as untrustworthy, which could prevent them from receiving revenue. Newsguard also works with social media companies, which could lead to users being banned or seeing their posts hidden.

House Republicans believe this company is working with federal agencies to accomplish their goals and if so, that is a violation of the First Amendment. The government cannot infringe on free speech. But the government is also banned from instructing private companies to censor Americans. Twitter and other social media outlets were outed in recent years for colluding with the government to censor users.
