The unprecedented chaos surrounding this year’s Speaker of the House vote continues.

According to the latest reports, there’s a deal on the table for Kevin McCarthy to finally get the votes he needs to become Speaker. But there hasn’t been this much debate on the issue since the Civil War.

And one GOP leader warns — if Republicans make a deal with Democrats, he’s going to resign.

Rep. Matt Gaetz quickly became a major player in the Speaker saga over the past week. He has been one of the major stumbling blocks facing McCarthy and his bid for the top House spot.

After former President Donald Trump endorsed McCarthy, Rep. Gaetz called the support “sad” and doubled down on his opposition of the California leader.

Ironically, Gaetz later nominated Trump for Speaker in a move that generated plenty of surprise and laughter.

Now that the GOP apparently has a deal on the table, the drama might finally end today. But if it’s the sort of deal that puts a “moderate” Republican in the House seat, Gaetz is done.

On FNC’s “The Ingraham Angle,” host Laura Ingraham asked Gaetz if he’d be okay if there was a deal that gave Democrats co-control of committees. Gaetz’s reply:

Absolutely not. That will not happen. There’s two potential scenarios here. I’m on the floor. These 212 Democrats are going to vote for Hakeem Jeffries every single time.

He’s a historic candidate. They’re not going to cleave off. If Democrats join up to elect a moderate Republican, I will resign.

About 20 House Republicans have stood up against McCarthy ten times now, which means both sides will have to reach some sort of agreement.

Prior to the vote, there were rumblings on Capitol Hill that the Speaker issue could erupt into total chaos, and some said the situation in D.C. would be worse if McCarthy couldn’t get in.

It’s true that right now, many Democrats are having a field say with the fracturing of the Republican Party on display in Washington.

Some right-wingers support the split, though, saying that it’s necessary to send a message and enact real change. A few politicos have also called it a sign that the democratic process is working.

On the other hand, some just say it makes the GOP look bad, and proves there’s a serious unity problem with the party.
