The question of patriotism is one of the most important today: it’s often a sticking point in the ongoing battle between right-wing and left-wing voters, and tends to polarize citizens.
It also stands to reason that some states are seen as more “patriotic” than others, depending on the factors you choose to examine. So, do you happen to live in one of the most patriotic states?
A recent study can give you that answer.
WalletHub recently devised a study that used 13 indicators of patriotism, and it hinges on each state’s military enlistees and veterans, as well as residents who voted in the 2020 presidential election.
It also takes into account how active citizens typically are in regards to community and causes, and how many Peace Corps volunteers each state has.
The results might not be exactly what you expect, however.
According to the final charts, the top 5 most patriotic states in America are:
5. New Hampshire
Montana appears to win the “most patriotic” crown, thanks primarily to its #1 rank on Civil Engagement. This offset being ranked only #22 in the Military Engagement category.
Alaska claimed the runner-up spot in the exact opposite fashion: they were #1 on Military Engagement, and #22 on Civil Engagement.
Vermont, New Hampshire and Maryland all ranked in the top 5 for Civil Engagement, though lower on Military Engagement. This suggests more weight was given to the Civil Engagement section.
As for the least patriotic states:
50. New York
New York comes in dead last due to being in the bottom five on both Military and Civil Engagement (49 and 45 respectively).
Florida, perhaps surprisingly, ranked last in Civil Engagement, causing them to be near the bottom of the overall list, and Michigan and Connecticut were in the bottom five for Military Engagement.
Other interesting results include:
Alaska has the most veterans and the second most active enlistees per capita, while Massachusetts ranked in the bottom five in both categories.
Vermont and Montana have the most Peace Corps volunteers, while Louisiana and Mississippi have the fewest.
Perhaps most importantly, we might have a reason why Joe Biden won the presidency — the top 5 states that had the most people voting in the election last year are all Democrat strongholds.
On the other hand, the bottom five are almost entirely Red states. This might show that Conservatives need to be more active in the next election if they hope to reclaim the White House.
At any rate, the results are sure to get plenty of argument and discussion going, that’s for sure.
