The NFL is distancing itself from the speech Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave during a commencement address at a private college in Kansas over the weekend, when he encouraged women graduates to embrace their “vocation” as a “homemaker,” and criticized the LGBTQ community and President Biden for his stance on abortion.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People Magazine. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Many doubt the NFL’s back-stabbing response will strengthen the league in the eyes of fans, many who are Christians. Butker was widely attacked for his comments online, and the NFL didn’t defend its star player. The league’s statement was akin to a late hit on the kicker.

Butker didn’t mince words during his speech. He encouraged women to be excited about their potential work careers while also embracing marriage, children and “the most important titles of all: homemaker.” He relayed how he was blessed with many talents, but it could not be overstated that all of his success was made possible by his wife who “leans into her vocation.

Butker continued his “controversial” speech by giving his opinion of Pride month. He called it a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it.” He also specifically pointed to Biden’s “delusional” stance on abortion.

“He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice,” he said.

Butker may not be winning points with leftists, but he won the support of Christians and others who welcome someone in the spotlight defending their beliefs. The NFL failed its fans while Butker kicked leftist ideals to the curb.
