What’s Happening:
From the very start of former House Speaker McCarthy’s time in power, there were numerous Republicans opposing him. They criticized his leadership, undermined his agenda, and voted against bills that would have helped the American public.
It all came to a head this week after McCarthy managed to stave off a government shutdown. Rep. Matt Gaetz motioned to remove McCarthy from the speakership, claiming he was working with Democrats. Yet Gaetz relied on the votes of Democrats to successfully kick McCarthy out.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has been watching the entire debacle. He is in no way pleased that members of McCarthy’s own party voted to remove him from the role. And he criticized these lawmakers with a single word.
From Breitbart:
“…From my position as a longtime Republican activist, they’re traitors. All eight of them should, in fact be primaried. They should all be driven out of public life. What they did was to go to the other team to cause total chaos. We ought to be focusing on Biden. We ought to be focusing on the economy. We ought to be focusing on the border. Instead, you’re going to get a week or 10 days of the media focusing on Republican disarray. It’s an astonishingly destructive behavior by a handful of egocentric people who think they’re superior to 96% of the conference.”
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was extremely critical of the eight Republicans who sided with Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership. He called these Republicans “traitors.” But that’s not all.
Gingrich called for these eight to be primaried in the upcoming election. He said they should be “driven out of public life,” which apparently means he wants them unable to hold public office again.
The former speaker was so angry because he said these eight lawmakers helped the “other team” to spread “chaos” within the House. Gingrich explained that Republicans should “be focusing on Biden” and the economy. Instead, these eight Republicans were “astonishingly destructive” by their actions.
Gingrich accused them of being “egocentric people” who think they are “superior” to the vast majority of House Republicans. Because they sided with Democrats to remove McCarthy, it is likely the left will use this episode to advance their agenda.
Democrats might go to the American people and point to this conflict to convince voters not to support the GOP. Despite conflict and controversy among Democrats, we’ve never seen them vote against their former speakers.
Even Nancy Pelosi, who frequently flip-flopped on her promises and supported far-left policies, managed to get her entire party to vote most of the time. Yet the House GOP is embroiled in scandal, just a year before a major election.
Key Takeaways:
- Newt Gingrich called the 8 Republicans who voted out McCarthy “traitors.”
- These Republicans sided with Democrats to remove McCarthy from the speakership.
- Gingrich said they are “egocentric” and have been “astonishingly destructive.”
- He called for these Republican lawmakers to be primaried in the next election.
