California Gov. Gavin Newsom is having a bad 2021. Once, he enjoyed a record approval rating.
Today, he is looking at a potential recall vote this November. The movement to get him recalled gained significant momentum, after he shut down the state (again) through the fall and winter.
Now, 1.5 million have signed the petition to kick him out. The RNC donated $250,000 to seal the deal.
And a Republican challenger is making things even harder for old Newsom.
From Fox News:
One of the two major Republican candidates running in the likely California gubernatorial recall election is investing another $1 million of his own money into his campaign…
Cox is hoping to succeed embattled Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who faces a possible recall over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Last week, we reported that recall organizers warned that the recall effort might fail, if they could not secure enough signatures before the deadline.
Well, it looks like they got a big shot in the arm, thanks to one Republican challenger, John Cox. The governor hopeful donated $1 million to his campaign to retake the governor’s seat.
That will likely be useful in obtaining the extra signatures recall leader said would be needed to offset attempts by Newsom’s people. They warned that Newsom supporters will try to enact strict signature verification, in the hopes of rejecting hundreds of thousands of recall signatures.
This injection of cash could help organizers reach many more people, ensuring that the recall effort crosses the finish line.
At least two Republicans are already gearing up to run against Newsom, should the effort succeed. There will most likely be a primary race over the summer to determine who will take on the Democrat.
It’s shocking to think that a popular Democrat, in an uber-liberal state, would be facing such a fate after only 2 years in office.
But many blame Newsom for the ongoing COVID problems. Not only did the state suffering high cases and many deaths, but the governor pushed strict rules that hurt millions. He shut down schools, restaurants, and even violated churches.
Meanwhile, he and other Democrats were caught breaking their own lockdown rules.
That, among other reasons, gave the struggling recall effort a massive surge. With each passing day, it’s becoming more likely that Newsom will face a challenger.
If he survives… well, that remains to be seen.
