After Menendez Humiliated in Case – Unlike Biden, He Announces Upcoming Resignation

President Joe Biden finally announced on Sunday that he will be dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. Many would argue that he should have resigned years ago, as his apparent cognitive decline has been on full display for quite some time. Now, another powerful Democrat has announced that he’s throwing in the towel as well, albeit for very different reasons.

Last week, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) was convicted of bribery. On Tuesday, he sent a letter to the Senate officially resigning from Congress. This letter was immediately entered into record by the Senate.

That’s right, folks, another corrupt Democrat just bit the dust. Two down, and many more to go!

From The Hill:
Menendez faces potential decades in prison after being convicted on federal charges of bribery, acting as a foreign agent and the rest of the 16 counts he faced for allegedly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from business associates, including the owner of a company that prosecutors said benefited handsomely from Menendez’s influence over U.S. foreign policy.

The 70-year-old, who has held his seat since 2006, vowed to appeal the conviction. He had been planning to run for reelection as an independent in November.

Menendez is reportedly not expected to show up for the last two weeks of the session before Congress takes an August recess. His official date for when he’ll step down is listed as August 20.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) made a point of specifically calling on Menendez to not attend any congressional event where he could still receive confidential briefings.

More from The Hill:
“I don’t expect to see him,” Durbin told reporters.  “I think he knows the sensitivity of the situation. I don’t think he should be treated as a sitting senator when it comes to anything confidential.”

Menendez’s departure also coincides with pay-day for senators and Senate staff as both are paid on the 5th and 20th of every month.

Of course, Menendez has to stay just long enough to get those last two paychecks. How typical of a greedy leftwing lawmaker!

Menendez had been resisting pressure to step down since he was first indicted for this bribery case. Apparently, this pressure finally became too much for him after he was convicted.

New Jersey Rejoices

Menendez’s resignation appears to have come as good news to the people of New Jersey, as even the most devoted of Democrats could no longer deny his blatant corruption.

More from The Hill:
“Menendez has made the right decision for New Jersey by agreeing to step down next month,” said Rep. Andy Kim, who is the Democratic nominee running to take over Menendez’s seat, in a statement to The Hill.

“It’s time for New Jersey to move forward,” Kim added. “We have big challenges ahead of us, and we can only tackle them if we show the people of our state that this is the beginning of a new era of politics built on integrity, service, and delivering for all families.”

Perhaps the residents of New Jersey will wise up and decide that it’s better to vote a Republican into office rather than risk ending up with another corrupt Democrat in power. The likelihood of that happening in this blue state is slim, but it’s a nice thought!

There may not be many similarities between Menendez’s resignation and Biden’s dropping out of the presidential race. However, seeing a corrupt Democrat resign serves as a reminder that Biden should have done the same thing many years ago.

We can only hope that this is the start of a new trend of crooked Democrats finally being held accountable for their actions. After all, Menendez is far from the only corrupt Democrat in Congress!

Key Takeaways

  • Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has been convicted of bribery.
  • Menendez has resigned from Congress.
  • Hopefully more crooked Democrats are held accountable for their corruption.
