The news that former President Donald Trump might be arrested this week hit the political world like a ton of bricks.
If Trump gets indicted, it will mark the first time in American history that a former POTUS is officially charged with a crime. However, Trump maintains his innocence.
And now, a last-minute update could change the entire trajectory of the investigation.
According to The Daily Wire, a new witness is expected to testify this week, and it might go a long way towards helping Trump:
A lawyer who previously advised ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen is expected to testify this week in the Manhattan grand jury investigation into former President Donald Trump’s alleged $130,000 hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election.
Attorney Robert Costello is reportedly prepared to attack the credibility of Cohen, who allegedly made the payment to Daniels on Trump’s behalf and was later improperly reimbursed for the expense.
The Associated Press says Costello has information that flies in the face of Cohen’s current accusations, and that’s good news for the “MAGA” President.
Apparently, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office subpoenaed Costello’s law firm for records, and asked him to testify on Monday afternoon. Obviously, this is all happening very fast.
Trump quickly reacted, posting on social media:
THE MOST IMPORTANT WITNESS TO GO BEFORE THE NEW YORK CITY GRAND JURY, A HIGHLY RESPECTED LAWYER WHO ONCE REPRESENTED CONVICTED FELON, JAILBIRD, AND SERIAL FAKE STORYTELLER AND LIAR, MICHAEL COHEN, WILL BE DOING SO TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
THE INFORMATION HE WILL PRESENT WILL SUPPOSEDLY BE CONCLUSIVE AND IRREFUTABLE!
Trump is being accused of hush money payments to former porn star Stormy Daniels, allegedly delivered during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Critics maintain that federal investigators should be more interested in the Biden administration; specifically, the accusations that the Hunter Biden scandal was actively covered up during the 2020 campaign.
And some also believe that an arrest and indictment of Trump could lead to a fresh outpouring of support from conservatives.
Other critics, like well-known pundit Ben Shapiro, calls the entire case “absurd” and that it’s obviously “political targeting.”
At the same time, the case is moving forward — and prosecutors could raise the misdemeanor in question to a felony if they can prove that Trump had intention to “commit or conceal a second crime.”
They say the $130,000 in alleged hush money was an improper donation to the Trump campaign, which they’ll have to prove in court.
As for the former President, it’s likely that he’ll continue to say the whole thing is ridiculous, and that his opponents will just do anything to keep him out of the White House.
Key Takeaways:
- A new witness could change the direction of the current Trump/Stormy Daniels investigation.
- Lawyer Robert Costello might come in to attack the credibility of ex-Trump attorney Michael Cohen.
- If he refutes Cohen’s accusation, that could lead to a not guilty verdict for Trump.
