In the weeks since Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee, she’s frequently claimed that she had a “middle-class” childhood when she was growing up. Like most things that come out of her mouth, however, this has seemingly turned out to be a blatant lie.

Harris has often alleged that she is from Oakland, a blue-collar California city with a large black population. Last month, she proudly described herself as “a daughter of Oakland, California.” She added that she “was raised by a working mother and had a summer job at McDonald’s.”

Though Harris was technically born at a hospital in Oakland, her graduate school student parents lived in Berkeley, California. There, they attended UC Berkeley, one of the top universities in the world. This area is known for being predominantly white and is a favorite spot of the liberal elite.

Throughout her childhood, Harris and her younger sister Maya attended ritzy private schools. They also had other opportunities that true “middle-class” children could only dream of having.

Harris and her sister would spend weekends and summers with their father in the nearby city of Palo Alto — one of the richest and most exclusive zip codes in America and known as the “birthplace of Silicon Valley.” It was also not very diverse. In 2010, it had less than a one-percent black population.

Harris and her sister would also take “frequent visits” to Jamaica, where their father came from a privileged family of former slaveowners. They would also take trips to Chennai, India, to visit her mother’s family.

When Harris was around 12 years old, her family moved to Montreal, Canada. This move happened because her mother got a job teaching at Jewish General Hospital at McGill University, one of Canada’s top universities.

Kamala’s life of privilege only got better in Montreal.

Harris spent the next approximately six years in Canada, first attending a French-language primary school called Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, which according to the school’s website, is in a “beautiful neighborhood.”

The year after they moved to Montreal, Harris’ mother bought her first home in Oakland. This is a story that Harris often recounts on the campaign trail. The details that she typically leaves out, however, are very telling.

Harris has said her mother saved for “many years” for a down payment on the home, which she described as “a one-level dark-gray house on a cul-de-sac, with a shingled roof.”

However, what Harris has not said was that the home was located in the hills of Oakland by a golf course — one of the wealthiest and most beautiful areas of Oakland. That three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is now worth an estimated $914,881, according to a posting on Redfin.

Did Harris Really Work At McDonald’s?

As for Harris’ claims that she worked at McDonald’s restaurant to earn extra money as a teenager, she has never offered any evidence to back this up. Her campaign has alleged that she worked at a McDonald’s in Alameda, California.

This would be odd, however, as investigators have found that there are other McDonald’s restaurants that are located closer to the home that Harris’ mother owned in Oakland. Why would she skip over those establishment to work at a McDonald’s further away in Alameda?

Given how well her family appears to have been doing financially, it also seems unlikely that a teenage Harris would have needed to work at McDonald’s to make extra money. One would additionally think that after touting this alleged McDonald’s story so many times, at least one small piece of evidence that Harris ever worked there would have turned up by now. Instead, Harris still expects voters to just take her word for it that she was once a McDonald’s worker.

Harris is desperately trying to portray herself as someone who has a rags to riches story. In reality, she’s clearly a woman who has enjoyed a life of privilege from the very beginning. This all serves as a reminder that when it comes to Kamala Harris, absolutely nothing that she says can be trusted.
