During this time of year, it’s important to reflect on what matters most. And it’s not that partisan bickering that taints Washington. It’s the values that unite all Americans, despite our differences.
Take, for instance, the story of Davyon Johnson. This young man literally saved a classmate’s life, by performing the Heimlich maneuver. But he didn’t stop there. Because, soon after, he did something even more heroic.
Earlier this month, a sixth-grader from Oklahoma, Davyon Johnson performed the Heimlich maneuver on a classmate. Then, that same day, Davyon rescued an elderly woman from a burning house…
Later, while walking after school, Davyon saw an elderly woman trying to escape a house fire. Again, he rushed into action, helping the elderly woman with her walker get out of the home.
A classmate was opening up a bottle of water with his mouth. The cap slipped into his throat and he began to choke. The student stumbled into Davyon’s classroom, and he made his move.
Davyon saved the other student, thanks to learning the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube. Imagine that. Most kids watch Minecraft videos, Davyon was learning how to save someone’s life.
That very same day, Davyon discovered an elderly woman struggling to escape a burning house. Davyon jumped in again, helping the woman get her walker and free her from the fire.
The young man’s accomplishments were not ignored by the local community. Muskogee Country Sheriff’s Office and the public schools honored Davyon. The mayor even declared December 9 “Davyon Johnson Day” to remember his heroic actions.
Davyon’s actions are a wonderful reminder of what matters in our country. He didn’t hesitate to help those in need. Regardless of who we are or what we believe, we can make a difference in the lives of those around us.
