GOP Scores Historic Victory in Blue State – First Time in 20 Years This Has Happened

What’s Happening:

Republicans didn’t have the success they wanted on a national scale during elections this week. High hopes for retaking state legislatures and retaking key governorships fell flat as candidates failed to deliver.

Mainstream media and liberals jumped for joy even though some of the GOP targets for wins were considered long shots. Republicans did secure wins in some state races to follow up on winning back the governorship in Louisiana earlier.

One of the Democrat stronghold states did weaken this week with a Republican challenger taking a key seat in the heart of New York. Republican Ed Romaine defeated Democrat Dave Calone on Tuesday to become the first Republican to win the Suffolk County executive position in 20 years.

From Fox News:
“For the third year in a row, [Republicans] in New York had a great night, defeating incumbents and winning upset elections across the state,” New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox said in a statement, adding that Long Island has become a “Republican bastion.”

And this was a clear win from Republicans within a deep-blue state. Romaine won with 56% of the vote by a margin of 26,000 votes, The Associated Press projected. The win cements Republican control on the eastern part of Long Island. The GOP occupies all the countywide seats in Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as all four congressional seats.

The win wasn’t lost on past and current officeholders within New York.

“This is a political earthquake,” former Sen. Al D’Amato, R-N.Y., told the New York Post.

Romaine voiced on Tuesday how he believes voters are seeking change and candidates to deliver something better. He told supporters that they have “given me a large mandate tonight and I plan to use that mandate to move this county forward.”

Political analysts watching this change in New York politics have noticed a “red wave” that swept over Long Island in recent elections. Analysts have attributed the change in voter sentiment to spiking crime and the liberal push to defund police.

A huge flip from Democrats to Republicans in an area within New York presents opportunity for the GOP to expand on that success across the state and possibly beyond.

Key Takeaways:

  • GOP flips New York seat held by Democrats for 20 years.
  • Voter tallies show the Republican winning with large margin.
  • Fellow politicians call the win a “political earthquake” for the GOP.
