GOP Leader Nominates 1 Huge Name for Speaker – And D.C. Can’t Believe He Did It

What’s Happening:

Republicans are shuffling through their options to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who announced that he will not run again for the seat. GOP members are responsible for replacing the speaker so that House business can resume with assigned leadership.

Many don’t know that anyone can be nominated for Speaker of the House. Party affiliation and being an elected representative are not requirements. Someone’s uncle Bob could be nominated and elected.

One of the biggest names in politics is being floated as a possible candidate to pursue the speaker’s gavel. He would bring plenty of weight to the position and an international flair for politics. His nomination was formally presented by Republican Texas Rep. Troy Nehls.

From the Daily Caller:
“This week, when the U.S. House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives,” Nehls said. “President Trump, the greatest President of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America First and will make the House great again.”

McCarthy lost the speaker’s gavel on Tuesday after eight House Republicans joined with all Democrats present in voting on a motion to vacate the chair. Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz filed the motion. He and McCarthy have been publicly at odds on a number of issues since McCarthy was elected to the chair.

Trump has been involved this week in a fraud trial in Manhattan where the New York state attorney general is trying to get him convicted on charges related to his personal and business finances. According to Fox News, Trump weighed in on the idea of being elected Speaker of the House.

“A lot of people have been asking me about it,” Trump said. “My total focus is on being president.”

His dismissive answer adding that there are other “great people” in the GOP who could handle the job didn’t appear to be a hard decline of the possibility. He also stated that he would do what is “best for the country and the Republican Party.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Democrats could face their biggest rival as leader of the U.S. House.
  • McCarthy’s ouster as House Speaker opens possibility for Trump.
  • Trump says he remains focused on running for president, but…
