The border crisis only continues to rage. Republican governors have sided with Texas Gov. Abbott, who is fighting to secure the border. Meanwhile, Democrats have put forward a bill that would only make the problem worse.
Elon Musk has even accused Democrats of wanting more illegal immigration, to secure a “one-party state.”
Illegal immigration will no doubt be a major issue going into the 2024 Election. A Republican candidate running in one state is defending strong immigration laws. But not that long ago, his policies were much, much different.
From Fox News:
A Republican state legislator running for Congress in Indiana is stressing the need to tackle illegal immigration, but has supported legislation that would have provided driving “cards” and in-state tuition rates for those in the U.S. illegally…[State Sen. Mark Messmer] co-sponsored SB200 in 2022, which would have provided for illegal immigrants in the state to “apply for a driving card learner’s permit and driving card to obtain driving privileges.”
Today, Mark Messmer, who is running for Congress, claims he is “devoted” to addressing issues like illegal immigration. But while he was state senator, he co-sponsored a bill just two years ago that would have given illegal aliens the right to apply for driver’s licenses.
He also supported a bill that would have allowed illegal aliens living in Indiana the same tuition rates for school as legal residents. That would have resulted in out-of-state Americans paying higher tuition rates than illegal immigrants.
Republican voters will no doubt ask why Messmer was so eager to support bills that benefitted people living in America illegally. If he is elected to Congress, will he support Republican efforts to secure the border? Or will he flip and side with Democrats who seem to be rolling out a red carpet for illegals?
Messmer said that he is devoted to addressing “illegal immigration, safeguarding our liberties, protecting the unborn, balancing the federal budget, stopping the woke agenda, and growing jobs in Southwest Indiana.” Is that true or are those just talking points he knows conservative voters care about?
I guess he’ll have to answer that question himself.
Key Takeaways:
- A Republican running for Congress recently supported state legislation that rewarded illegal immigrants.
- One bill would have given illegal aliens driver’s licenses. The other bill would have let illegals pay less tuition for school.
- Mark Messmer now claims to be “devoted” to addressing illegal immigration.
