After FBI Lawyer Green-Lit Trump Team Surveillance, He Is Forced To Resign

What’s Happening:

A top FBI lawyer has been revealed as a key member in the crafting of warrants against the Trump campaign.

It was later revealed this same lawyer was involved in an attempt by the agency to prevent the release of evidence that could clear Michael Flynn’s name.

Now, it has been reported this lawyer was forced to resign.

After a 38-year career with the Justice Department, the FBI’s top lawyer Dana Boente was asked to resign on Friday. Two sources familiar with the decision to dismiss Boente said it came from high levels of the Justice Department rather than directly from FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Why It’s Important:

More news has emerged in recent months, exposing the circumstances around the wiretapping of Trump’s campaign staffer Carter Page as well as the investigation against Michael Flynn.

It was revealed that FBI lawyers omitted exculpatory information when requesting a warrant against Page. Such information would have eliminated a need to monitor him. Later, we discovered that the FBI had unclear or perhaps questionable motives in their case against Flynn, Trump’s former National Security Advisor.

Dana Boente was at the center of these cases. He signed the warrant request against Page. And he advised FBI Director Wray to block the release of evidence that could have cleared Flynn’s name. His resignation is a sign that the DOJ is confronting apparent abuse within the agency.

Key Takeaways:

  • FBI lawyer Dana Boente was forced to resign.
  • Boente was at the center of various FBI-led cases against the Trump campaign and administration.
  • It appears Boente tried to block the release of evidence that could clear Flynn’s name.
