It’s the start of “Pride Month” and that means a nationwide display of pro-LGBTQ events, including the controversial drag shows.

Some states have clamped down on these spectacles, though. For example, states like Florida and Texas have passed laws that bans minors from attending the events due to sexually explicit content.

And now, one drag show just got erased entirely — and the cancellation is making headlines.

The event in question was scheduled for today, June 1. It was a “family-friendly” drag show with “no minimum age requirement,” and alcohol available those of legal drinking age.

This was to take place at the Nevada Air Force base and was billed as a “free community drag showcase” featuring a well-known drag queen, CoCo Montrese, from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

But it’s not going to happen, according to a report from the New York Post (via The Blaze):

Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas was directed to shut down the performance or move it off military grounds, despite the location being used to host previous drag shows.

‘The DOD will not host drag events at U.S. military installations or facilities. Hosting these types of events in federally funded facilities is not a suitable use of DOD resources,’ Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary, confirmed in an email to the New York Post.

Singh also told NBC News that in order for such events to happen, “certain criteria must be met for persons or organizations in non-Federal capacity to use DoD facilities and equipment.”

That’s from a DoD Joint Ethics Regulation (JER) rule, though there is no mention of the event being canceled because of the “no minimum age requirement.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz is one of the individuals responsible for the event cancellation; he confronted Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley about “Drag Queen Story Hours” happening at U.S. military bases.

Milley was reportedly furious about it, and angry upon finding out about the show at the Nellis Air Force Base.

The General claimed he was “unaware” of the drag show:

That’s the first I’m hearing about that kind of stuff. I don’t read those news stories. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

I’d like to take a look at those because I don’t agree with those.

Immediately after the cancellation of the event, Rep. Gaetz applauded the decision on Twitter:

The cultural war surrounding the concept of drag shows – especially as they pertain to minors – continues to rage.

Conservatives maintain that it’s dangerous propaganda and also illegal, as the events contain sexually explicit material that’s completely inappropriate for kids.

And in this case, the idea of using military bases for such events, which of course includes the use of taxpayer cash, isn’t going over well with critics. It’s guaranteed to be a serious point of contention.
