What’s Happening:
As the news cycle continues to rage, the biggest political story continues to simmer quietly in the background: the 2024 election.
Many Americans are exhausted by the current administration as their retirement accounts have dropped, inflation has eaten away at their paychecks, and the borders and their neighborhoods are less safe. They’re ready for some new leadership, and it remains to be seen whether Biden actually runs again.
Donald Trump is the only man to officially throw his hat in the ring at this point, but Americans are anticipating at least a handful of people to challenge him for the Republican nomination. But that may be about to end soon.
From MSN:
Advisers to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are actively preparing for a possible presidential run, according to two Republicans with knowledge of the conversations who described meetings and preliminary staffing moves — the latest indication that DeSantis is laying a foundation for a national campaign.
DeSantis’s political team has already identified multiple potential hires in early primary states such as New Hampshire and Iowa, according to one of the Republicans, who said experienced operatives have expressed interest.
Ron DeSantis has played coy from about the 2024 election from the moment he won his Florida governor election with almost 60% of the vote. He claimed his focus needed to be on governing the state.
So, this is the first real indication America has gotten that DeSantis is actively planning to run for President in 2024. Arguments have already been brewing on why Ron should—and shouldn’t—get in the race.
Coming off that dominant, bipartisan victory, DeSantis seems to have made a case for developing a broader coalition of support. Te man does not shy away from controversial topics and decisions, but he does not actively attack the media.
Until recently, he has been leading in hypothetical polls, although Trump has made a recent resurgence.
On the other hand, Trump is the 800-pound gorilla in the room. He has proved he can systematically pick off primary opponents, he has a significant loyal base and he has the history of the Presidency behind him. And many think DeSantis needs to wait 4 more years until it’s “his time.”
But many see DeSantis as the new way forward: a leader that takes the best of Trump’s boldness and strong agenda with more tempered language and ability to attract moderate voters.
What do you think? Is it time for DeSantis to step up and lead the Republican Party, and the country? Or should he continue as Florida’s governor and let Trump run this election cycle?
Key Takeaways:
- New reports claim Ron DeSantis is gearing up for a 2024 presidential run.
- The Florida governor is lining up political operatives who can run a national campaign.
