A little while back, Democrat Eric Swalwell came under heavy scrutiny for his alleged relationship with a suspected Chinese spy. So far, he’s avoided any serious repercussions.
That might not hold forever, though. Because now, a group of military and intelligence experts are saying Swalwell needs to be removed immediately.
Before this news, only Republicans in Congress had called for Swalwell’s removal.
Last month, 17 GOP lawmakers delivered a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, demanding Swalwell be removed from the Intelligence Committee. Other right-wing politicos agreed.
But that was seen as a partisan complaint, and therefore didn’t receive a lot of legitimacy from the mainstream media.
However, this is very different. This is a non-partisan group of experts, and they’re calling for the same thing.
Via Washington Examiner:
Eric Swalwell’s relationship with Fang Fang, a suspected Chinese spy, should have seen him stripped of his security clearance and kicked off the House Intel Committee, according to military and intelligence experts.
Several of these experts weighed in on the severity of the situation.
For example, there’s retired Navy Brig. Gen. Rob Spalding, who said that if he’d been involved in the same situation, his career likely would’ve been over:
These are types of relationships that if I, a military member, had would be fired or possibly prosecuted.
Reporting it to authorities would just mean the end of my career.
He added that if you sit on an intelligence committee and “you have these kinds of relationships,” you need to be removed. It’s “just common practice,” he said.
Republicans have been saying for months that keeping Swalwell aboard constituted a serious security risk. And these experts obviously agree.
GOP Senator Rand Paul has already called for Swalwell’s resignation from Congress, though of course that hasn’t happened.
The relationship in question, with Swalwell and Fang Fang, remains somewhat mysterious — it apparently dates back to 2012, and Fang even held fundraisers for Swalwell’s congressional bid.
Now, non-partisan China analysts are calling the whole mess a “wake-up call and an opportunity to review the security clearance process.”
Said Timothy Heath, expert on U.S.-China relations and former analyst for the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command China Strategic Focus Group:
The threat of Chinese espionage is real. It’s hard to assess how much it is increasing, but we have anecdotal evidence in the form of media reports that suggest that it’s been increasing.
They’ve been using these honey-pot tactics to flip vulnerable people. [Swalwell’s] case is yet another example of the Chinese exploiting some of the features of a liberal democracy to insinuate themselves and gain access.
Heath finished by saying it’s “just shocking how little it’s taken seriously.”
Well, perhaps now this will be taken seriously. And maybe Swalwell should be a little concerned.
