What’s Happening:

Knowing what someone is doing when that person commits a crime is not a good place to be in once an indictment is handed down. Charges can be levied against anyone involved especially under the current Department of Justice that has shown it will charge someone just for being on the same street where a crime was allegedly committed.

Democrats have screamed for criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for years and have even called for prosecuting people who knew him. The idea is that his connections had to know what he was doing so it makes sense those people would be complicit.

That idea may hit home harder than Democrats would like after Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was indicted on bribery charges last week. Trump says it’s time for Democrats to be held responsible for knowing what Menendez was doing that led to the charges. Trump claims all the Senate Democrats knew about the alleged bribes he took.

“Senate Democrats should all resign based on Senator Bob Menendez!” Trump wrote on social media. “They all knew what was going on, and the way he lived.”

Trump also questioned why the FBI raided only Menendez’s home and not the rest of Senate Democrats’ homes. Trump also said that what President Joe Biden had in “some of his many homes” was likely worse than what Menendez had in his home. Biden and his son, Hunter, have been accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes when Joe was -vice president in the Obama administration.

Sparking Trump’s criticism was the extent of the indictment against Menendez. The long-time Democrat leader in the Senate is accused of a corrupt relationship with several New Jersey businessmen who allegedly gave the senator bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Conviction on these charges could land Menendez up to 45 years in prison. The charges include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. His wife, Nadine, is also named in the indictment.

The crimes allegedly involve up to $400,000 worth of gold bars being swapped with the senator who was to reach out to the Justice Department to aid an “admitted felon” accused of banking crimes. The alleged bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle and “other things of value.”

Menendez was previously indicted by the DOJ under the Obama administration in a case that alleged that he took bribes from a wealthy Florida doctor in exchange for political favors. A judge acquitted him of some charges and Menendez was never convicted due to a hung jury. The DOJ under Trump dropped the case.
