New York, by far, has suffered the most from the pandemic.
One in five deaths from COVID has been in New York. The state’s leaders certainly need to answer for this.
But who is the governor blaming? Donald Trump. After receiving significant aid from the Trump administration, the Democrat is turning on him.
But hours after he attacked Trump for his “poor” COVID response, Cuomo had to deal with a major development.
New York City’s health commissioner quit. And he’s squarely placing the blam, but not on Trump:
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot resigned from her post Tuesday, citing Mayor Bill de Blasio’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic in a critical letter…
“I leave my post today with deep disappointment that during the most critical public health crisis in our lifetime, that the Health Department’s incomparable disease control expertise was not used to the degree it could have been,” she wrote to de Blasio.
New York City’s Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot resigned, stating the mayor’s response to the crisis was unacceptable.
She said the health department’s “incomparable disease control expertise” was not used as it could have been.
It appears the city government’s leading health expert is saying the mayor refused to follow their advice during the crisis.
Although, it appears Barbot herself is responsible for some of the blunders. When the NYPD asked her for emergency supplies for their cops, she rejected them, reportedly insulting the city’s cops.
But that is only the tip of the iceberg of how bad the city’s leaders responded to the crisis. Early on, as the president and CDC urged social distancing, de Blasio was seen visiting his local gym.
He was reluctant to put any measures in place. In fact, he only issued his own order after the city’s entire health department leadership threatened to resign.
As rioters and protesters flooded the streets, ignoring safety rules he put into place, de Blasio embraced them. He even used city funds to paint a political message on public property.
So, why is the governor so quick to blame Trump for what was clearly the mistakes of his own people?
President Trump sent millions of units of PPE, not to mention many ventilators. He sent a Naval ship hospital as well as field hospitals.
The Javits Center was transformed into a hospital by the Army Corp of Engineers.
It appears the White House spared no expense to ensure New York had everything it needed. Yet, Cuomo attacks the president and ignores his own party members.
Perhaps politics have something to do with it?
- Cuomo criticized Trump’s leadership during the pandemic.
- Soon after, NYC’s health commissioner resigned, citing the mayor’s lack of leadership.
- During the height of the crisis, the president sent considerable aid to New York.
