Things are moving fast against embattled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
He was hit with accusations of a cover-up. Then Democrats started turning on him left and right as news of an FBI investigation came out.
Now, lawmakers in the state are saying “enough is enough.” And they are looking to set up an impeachment commission.
From Fox News:
New York’s top Republican state assemblyman wants to set up a bipartisan impeachment commission against Gov. Andrew Cuomo over his mishandling of coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes…
Barclay said the bipartisan impeachment commission would have “60 days to investigate and then give the report to the state legislature.”
“And if there’s something there, the assembly can move for articles of impeachment. All you need is a majority vote to do that. And then it would go to the Senate or a trial where they would need a two-thirds vote,” Barclay said.
Why It’s Important:
Republican Will Barclay of New York is calling for a commission to investigate just what Andrew Cuomo did.
Barclay believes impeachment might be in order, given the details of the growing scandal.
Here are some of the details as we know them. Plenty of controversy surrounded how Cuomo handled nursing homes during the lockdown.
A top aide claimed they tried to hide the number of deaths to avoid investigations by Trump’s DOJ. When that news came out, the FBI did launch an investigation.
Recently, Democrat lawmaker Ron Kim claims Cuomo threatened him over the phone to help clear up this mess.
Now, Barclay wants to know exactly what went on, and if what Cuomo did at any time constitutes a crime.
The Republican is calling for an eight-person commission, made up of four Republicans and four Democrats. The bipartisan commission will then investigate everything that has gone on over the last year.
My, how things have changed for Andrew Cuomo. Just last year, people were hoping he’d run for president.
Today, both Democrats and Republicans are gunning for him. Between an FBI investigation and now a possible impeachment (not to mention ongoing pandemic woes), the guy just can’t catch a break.
But perhaps, this was all his doing, in the end.
- A New York Republican is calling for a bipartisan impeachment commission against Gov. Cuomo.
- This comes as more details emerging, adding fuel to his growing nursing home scandal.
- Numerous Democrats have previously condemned the governor over the controversy.
