Make no mistake: China is not our ally.

Even though we benefit from several trade arrangements, the Communist country is still hell-bent on dominating America on the world stage.

This is a country that ignores its people’s human rights. They do not have free speech, press, or religion. The Chinese people are persecuted for exercising basic rights we take for granted. And its aggressive government wants to spread its toxic ideals around the globe.

What better way to do that than to appear friendly? How about setting up institutes on American campuses to spread Chinese Communist propaganda?

Sound crazy? It’s been going on for decades, and it’s reaching its highest levels yet.

Last year, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte made an announcement to great fanfare: The university would soon open a branch of the Confucius Institute, the Chinese government-funded educational institutions that teach Chinese language, culture and history…

But the Confucius Institutes’ goals are a little less wholesome and edifying than they sound—and this is by the Chinese government’s own account. A 2011 speech by a standing member of the Politburo in Beijing laid out the case: “The Confucius Institute is an appealing brand for expanding our culture abroad,” Li Changchun said. “It has made an important contribution toward improving our soft power. The ‘Confucius’ brand has a natural attractiveness. Using the excuse of teaching Chinese language, everything looks reasonable and logical…”

Confucius Institutes teach a very particular, Beijing-approved version of Chinese culture and history: one that ignores concerns over human rights, for example, and teaches that Taiwan and Tibet indisputably belong to Mainland China. Take it from the aforementioned Li, who also said in 2009 that Confucius Institutes are an “important part of China’s overseas propaganda set-up.” Critics also charge that the centers have led to a climate of self-censorship on campuses that play host to them.

Pretending to be a simple institute to spread Chinese language and culture these institutes are virtual counter-intelligence groups. They target impressionable college students, hoping to influence them to their way of thinking.

How can American colleges allow this to happen? How do our government intelligence agencies not see the obvious agenda? China is trying to undermine our values from the inside out. They have planted agents who seek to destroy our society, laws, and traditions. And it’s met with fanfare at our universities.

This is why we can never relinquish our values and traditions. Every day, liberals try to rewrite what we believe and how we should live. But they are merely pawns of outside forces. Forces, like China, who want to destroy American democracy and replace it with their society.
