This new minimum wage for fast food workers will apply to restaurants with at least 60 locations, but has an exception for restaurants that make and sell their own bread, such as Panera Bread.

Gov. Newsom of California signed a bill that will raise the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 an hour. The governor praised the bill as a “tectonic plate that had to be moved” claiming it will “stabilize an industry.”

Restaurant spending has been rapidly declining in the years following the COVID pandemic. Ongoing inflation, along with crippling gas prices, has forced restaurants to charge higher and higher prices for basic offerings.

That has resulted in a drop in business, across the country. This new minimum wage comes at a bad time for the industry.

For years, fast-food chains have been replacing workers with digital kiosks and apps. Many restaurants are making further changes to reduce the number of employees they need. A dramatic increase in wages could force companies to lay off workers, increase prices, or simply close locations in California.

Progressives have long demanded a national minimum wage of $15 an hour. Many blue states have met that or surpassed that, with the result of businesses firing workers. A bill that Democrats claim will “reward sacrifice” could end up driving people out of work.
