What’s Happening:
In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, numerous Democrat-led cities embraced sweeping police reforms. Despite any evidence proving it would work, many cities defunded police departments.
They also eliminated cash bail, released felons from prison, and lightened sentences for certain crimes. In some cities, district attorneys simply refused to prosecute most crimes.
The consequences of these decisions have been devastating, especially in one city known for crime. Now, after three years of madness, the mayor is issuing a major about-face. And she is admitting the left failed.
From The Post Millennial:
On Monday, Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that her administration would be ditching police reforms brought in following the death of George Floyd in favor of policies that will actually help bring down the city’s skyrocketing level of crime.Mayor Bowser of D.C. announced a new law that will reverse the pro-criminal, anti-cop policies put into place during 2020. The Addressing Crime Trends (ACT) Now Act will end progressive policies that resulted in skyrocketing crime across the nation’s capital.
Bowser was forced to admit that the left-wing policies that saw cops defunded and crime encouraged didn’t “match the daily practice of safe and effective policing.” She went on to say that the new reforms will “send the strong message that violence is not acceptable in our city, and this perception that people have that you can commit a brazen crime and get away with it has got to stop.”
This is a striking departure from the ideals being spread by local Democrats for years. With the rise of Black Lives Matter and the George Floyd protests, Democrats were quick to blame police officers for violence against black Americans.
They eagerly passed laws that stripped cops of resources and funding. And progressive DAs refused to prosecute crimes, claiming “criminal justice reform.” But every city that embraced these policy changes saw dramatic rises in crime.
Some quietly tried to restore police funding. Most admitted there was a problem. But Mayor Bowser is one of a growing number of Democrats openly confronting criminals and promising to bring them to justice.
The mayor of Dallas took a similar stance against rising crime in his city, enacting strong measures to curtail the crisis. He took the further step, however, to switch to the Republican Party–blaming Democrat policies for the ongoing crisis.
Key Takeaways:
- C. Mayor Bowser is reversing progressive policies that lead to skyrocketing crime.
- She passed the Addressing Crime Trends (ACT) Now Act that will confront the growing crime epidemic.
- Bowser vowed that brazen crime would no longer go unpunished.
