From the start, the Biden administration promised “transparency” with the media. They wanted to be fair and just with reporters.
But while the media does appear to be much friendlier to Joe than it was to Donald Trump, the transparency issue remains in question.
Now, a few reporters are speaking out.
As it turns out, Biden’s team has requested that they receive questions ahead of time. Apparently, this is in reference to more difficult queries.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the President’s communication staff have looked for advance knowledge of questions.
Via The Daily Beast, citing “three sources”:
…the new president’s communications staff have already on occasion probed reporters to see what questions they plan on asking new White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki when called upon during briefings.
One reporter brought up the problem during a White House Correspondents Association Zoom meeting last week.
Leaders at the meeting advised reporters to “push back” against White House requests to get questions in advance.
As one correspondent said:
While it’s a relief to see briefings return, particularly with a commitment to factual information, the press can’t really do its job in the briefing room if the White House is picking and choosing the questions they want.
That’s not really a free press at all.
On top of that, another source says “it pissed off enough reporters for people to flag it for the [WHCA] to deal with it.”
So far, the Biden administration has come under fire for avoiding the more difficult questions.
And now, it looks like they’re trying to learn about the questions in advance so they can have pre-prepared answers for reporters.
That opens the door to carefully constructed answers, as opposed to real-time answers.
And many will claim that this is basically the opposite of “transparency” — it certainly seems like it is.
- Reporters say the Biden administration is asking to get media questions early.
- Media members are saying this “isn’t really a free press” and poses a problem for the future.
- This also flies in the face of Biden’s repeated “transparency with the media” claim.
