Politicians are famous for getting a little off track at times when speaking about past events or touting their accomplishments or connections. Emotional speeches can sometimes lead people to not remember history as it happened.
In recent years the president has been called out for not remembering past events as clearly as one would expect of the leader of the free world. Joe Biden is world-famous for mumbling and stumbling through speeches. He’s even been fact-checked for accuracy on several occasions.
Almost on cue, Biden presented his rendition of past events this week and questions quickly arose about his accuracy. How he remembered the topics presented and how events happened were in question.
From The Daily Wire:
President Joe Biden appears to have outdone himself with the latest in a long series of tall tales — that range from minor exaggerations to partial fabrications — telling a crowd that the late President Ronald Reagan had once made him an extraordinary offer in an effort to save his life.
Biden’s reference to his brain aneurysm in early 1988, and he credited Reagan with offering the use of “Air Force – Helicopter One” to get Biden to emergency medical care. Fact-checkers questioned Biden’s recollection.
Biden did have two separate lifesaving surgeries to correct aneurysms, one on each side of his brain. But there are questions about the validity of a least part of his story.
The New York Times reported that Biden was transferred to Walter Reed from St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, according to The Daily Wire. The New York Post’s Steven Nelson noted that neither Biden’s own autobiography nor Reagan’s presidential diary made any mention of any other transport being offered by the White House at the time.
Even Biden’s previous account of the event didn’t appear to match his current version. Biden’s account of his trip to Walter Reed — given in great detail in his 2007 autobiography, “Promises to Keep” — also made no mention of any offer from the White House, The Daily Wire noted.
Biden relayed his current version of the story during opening remarks of a speech on Monday. He congratulated the city of Philadelphia for receiving a “SAFER Grant Award to Fund the Philadelphia Fire Department.”
Biden continued his usual ramblings during his Philadelphia speech by repeating an exaggerated account of the small kitchen fire that took place in his Delaware home. Firefighters reportedly contained the blaze in under 20 minutes, yet Biden has repeatedly said the fire department saved his wife and his home (and his beloved ’67 Corvette).
Key Takeaways:
- Biden lays it on thick with muddled retellings of past events during a speech.
- Reagan, a life-saving procedure, and a fire are caught up in his storytelling.
- Fact-checkers and Biden’s own book relay a different story than his recollection.
