Justin Amash Votes For Impeachment, Drops Out Of Presidential Race – And Now He’s Not Even Going To Seek Reelection

What’s Happening:

Justin Amash was a Republican congressman from Michigan. As Democrats pushed their impeachment probe, Amash broke from the party to support it.

Few Republicans (except Mitt Romney) were willing to do the same. It appears Justin Amash was forced out of the party, becoming an independent, then Libertarian.

To the surprise of everyone, this man decided to run for president in 2020 as a Libertarian candidate. But in just a month, he dropped out.

It seems Amash is having trouble mustering a base after turning his back on the Republican Party. Now, he’s not going to seek reelection:

Amash — who is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump — confirmed in a tweet late Thursday, “I love representing our community in Congress. I always will.”

He continued, “This is my choice, but I’m still going to miss it. Thank you for your trust.”

Additionally, Amash’s adviser Poppy Nelson told The Detroit News, “He hasn’t been campaigning for any office and doesn’t plan to seek the nomination for any office.”

It should come as no surprise that a man who openly defied the president and was ousted from his party is disappearing from public office.

The vast majority of conservatives in America considered the left’s impeachment of Donald Trump to be unjust. Republicans believe Democrats were scheming for years to do it, using the Ukrainian phone call as just an excuse.

Most Republican lawmakers were willing to stand up to the left and say as much. Amash, in an odd act of betrayal, turned against Trump to embrace impeachment. It wasn’t long before he left the ranks of the GOP.

A man with such a tarnished track record would have a hard time building a new voter base. Those who elected him as a Republican were surely unlikely to continue to support him then. And it doesn’t appear that the Libertarian Party is ready for primetime. At least not for Amash.

Amash would have hardly been accepted by Democrats. Even though he turned on Trump to curry the left’s favor, it doesn’t seem anyone on the left cared. Amash seems to have torched his career—and his future—over nothing.

Apparently he didn’t understand the groundswell of support for President Trump and his conservative agenda.

Key Takeaways:

  • Former Republican congressman Justin Amash announced he isn’t running for reelection.
  • The man left the GOP after he supported Democrats’ impeachment push.
  • He dropped out of the 2020 race after only a few weeks of announcing his bid.
