For months, President Trump has been airing his concerns about mail-in voting, so his recent statement is very interesting.
Stories have popped up again and again that many states aren’t ready to handle massive amounts of mailed-in ballots.
Trump has even worried that the election might not be decided for months.
But today, he took a sudden about-face and even embraced mail-in voting, but just for one state:
Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail! #MAGA
In a tweet, Trump explained that the Florida election system is “Safe and Secure.” He encouraged Florida residents to request a ballot and vote by mail.
While this may seem contradictory to his earlier comments, Republicans scored a major win in the state.
Democrats tried to slacken the rules for mail-in voting, paving the way for ballot harvesting. This scheme always Democratic operatives to use mail-in ballots to stockpile votes door-to-door.
Republicans took them to court and squashed their scheme.
That means Florida’s mail-in voting system will be much like normal absentee ballots. Voters can only vote-by-mail if they personally request a ballot.
Voters will only be able to receive a ballot if they are properly registered. Once they receive a ballot, they have to send it back. They won’t be able to vote in person (preventing voter fraud).
Quite a bit to cover, right? Well, other states pushing mail-in voting do not have the same protections in place.
Trump has hammered Nevada and other states for pushing mail-in voting, but they do not appear to have any sort of infrastructure to ensure ballots get in on time or won’t be lost/forged.
In New York, thousands of ballots were not counted during the primaries because they were not postmarked in time, which suggests voters sent them in on time, but the Post Office dropped the ball.
That problem might be repeated in numerous other states.
It appears that Trump is confident that mail-in voting is under control in Florida. He is encouraging his supporters to vote-by-mail because he knows every ballot will be counted.
- President Trump recently encouraged Florida voters to request a ballot by mail.
- He explained that Republicans secured voting in the state, preventing ballot harvesting by Democrats.
- Trump has previously opposed mail-in voting, worried that ballots might be lost or stolen.
